$997,674 GRANTED TO LOCAL AGENCIES

Fort Wayne, IN: The Fort Wayne Community Foundation, in its second quarter of 2005, granted a total of $997,674 to nonprofit agencies in Allen County. The Board of Directors of the Fort Wayne Community Foundation met May 12, 2005, and selected grants are listed below:

Grants awarded from the Community Grant Making Fund include:

Allen County Education Partnership, Inc.: $10,000 in general operating support for Project READS Neighborhood Literacy sites in which community volunteers meet once a week to help young students develop and improve their reading, writing, and comprehension skills.

Allen County Fort Wayne Historical Society, Inc.: $10,000 in operating support to help offset the cost of marketing and publicizing the museum’s programs, exhibits, and special events to help increase public awareness of the museum as an educational resource for local heritage.

American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana: $10,000 in general operating support for the agency’s various programs including disaster, armed forces emergency, health and safety, and translation services.

ARCH, Inc.: $10,000 in general operating support for the historic preservation organization focused on architecture and community heritage offering educational programs, advocacy for specific structures, information and guidance to property owners, and research services.

Audiences Unlimited, Inc.: $9,000 to support visiting musicians and music therapists who stroll room-to-room to brighten the lives of the bedfast and room bound residents in local nursing homes.

East Wayne Street Center: $13,124 to purchase and install a new telephone system replacing the three separate systems currently used by the human services organization that provides low-income families with the opportunity to improve their living conditions.

Easter Seals ARC of Northeast Indiana, Inc.: $10,297 in technology support to purchase software, assistive technology, and desks to help enhance the agency’s mission of helping children, youth, and adults with disabilities become as independent as possible.

Fort Wayne Medical Society, Inc.: $10,000 in general operating support for the Healthier Moms and Babies program to provide health education and case management services to low income, high risk pregnant women and their families to address the preventable causes of infant mortality and preterm deliveries.

Fort Wayne Zoological Society, Inc.: $17,963 in technology support designed to enhance the experience of zoo visitors, document animal behavior, and record events at the zoo for publications and their website, and to improve staff efficiency.

Hoagland Area Advancement Association, Inc.: $32,908 to help construct a centrally located restroom and concession building by the park’s four baseball diamonds to provide safe, sanitary, and handicap accessible facilities for those enjoying the Hoagland park.

Junior League of Fort Wayne, Inc.: $3,103 for technology improvements to help support the agency’s mission of promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Turnstone Center for Disabled Children and Adults, Inc.: $10,000 in operating support to help build residential wheelchair access ramps at the homes of people with disabilities at little or no cost to the recipient.

United Hispanic Americans, Inc.: $10,000 in operating support to help strengthen the management capabilities of the organization to improve utilization of resources and energy, delivering effective programs and services to improve the quality of life for Hispanics in the area.

Grants awarded from the Clarke Endowment Fund include:

Boys and Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne, Inc.: $45,000 for Project Connect, a program designed to bridge the technology gap by implementing after-school education and homework assistance programs that strive to make children and their families more self-reliant.

Harold W. McMillen Center for Health Education, Inc.: $50,000 to help replace the roof at the health education facility that promotes physical, emotional, and social well being.

Headwaters Park Alliance, Inc.: $25,000 towards the installation of a permanent pavilion canopy to cover the festival plaza to extend the use of the park into spring and fall while saving users the cost of renting and temporarily erecting large tents for events.

Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana, Inc.: $6,000 for the Global Marketplace program, which provides practical information about global economy, what makes world trade work, and how trade affects students’ daily lives.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana, Inc.: $5,000 for the Faith-Based Partnership program designed to create a partnership and alliance between the agency and local faith communities to help deliver information and education on sexuality issues in the context of the faith communities’ moral beliefs.

Stop the Madness, Inc.: $50,000 for the Parents and Children Excelling (PACE) program that places adults in the schools during the day to talk to students who need positive role models and support to help these students develop leadership and life skills.

Grants awarded from the Business Education Fund include:

Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana, Inc.: $14,000 for the Global Marketplace program that teaches sixth grade students various aspects of global trade and provides practical information about what makes international trade work and how it affects their daily lives.

Established in 1956, the Fort Wayne Community Foundation is a public, charitable foundation serving Allen County. The community foundation had assets of more than $85 million at December 31, 2004, and awarded more than $6.2 million in charitable grants and scholarships in that year. These dollars support programs and projects for arts and culture, community development, education, health and human services, and other charitable purposes.
