The Paul Clarke Foundation Awards Grants Totaling $201,318 to Local Agencies in Second Quarter

Fort Wayne, IN: At their June 3, 2004, meeting, the Directors of The Paul Clarke Foundation approved 10 grants totaling $201,318.

A grant of $44,725 was awarded to A.S.K. Ministries, Inc. for the A.S.K. Medical Clinic, which provides free medical care to the homeless and low-income population in Allen County. The services provided by A.S.K. include treatment for acute care problems and for chronic conditions, a diabetic clinic, an exercise class, and free counseling. Bilingual staff, physicians, and nurse practitioners are available at the clinic located at 2513 S. Calhoun St.

Additional Paul Clarke Foundation grants awarded include:

• African-American Healthcare Alliance of Fort Wayne, Inc.: $3,935 for Metro Health Screenings and Physicals to provide physicals to disadvantaged and minority youths who wish to participate in Metro football and school sports in the fall.

• Fort Wayne Park Foundation, Inc.: $30,000 for the Lifetime Sports Academy, which gives children the opportunity to learn how to play golf and tennis and how to learn to swim. The Academy provides free golf clubs and tennis racquets to participants who successfully complete the program.

• G.A.T.E., Inc.: $12,900 for the Summer Gardening Program that teaches inner city kids about growing food, planting vegetables, plowing, setting up marketing stands, aesthetically enhancing land, and selling produce to the public.

• InterVarsity Christian Fellowship: $1,000 to help defray the costs of three students attending an eight-week summer internship with John Perkins in Jackson, MS.

• The Shepherd’s House, Inc.: $6,850 for the purchase and installation of a Fire Protection System at Shepherd’s House, a long-term residential living center for alcohol and chemically addicted men. The facility assists indigent, unemployed and uninsured individuals with addictions.

• Summit City Athletic Association: $25,000 for the Brother to Brother, Sister to Sister Program, which provides an academic and mentoring program for youth presently participating in the summer track program with the Summit City track teams.

• Theta Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.: $35,608 to cover salary and payroll taxes, equipment and maintenance, postage, and printing and supplies for the Alpha Tyme Program designed to mentor and to assist in the development of African-American and Hispanic/Latino middle school males.

• West Central Neighborhood Ministry, Inc.: $20,000 for the East Side, West Side Year Round Youth Program that includes activities such as homework help, Reading Club, Study Connection, Knitting Club, visiting artists, science nights, ethnic nights, crafts, and other recreational activities.

• YWCA Fort Wayne: $21,300 in salary support for the development and piloting of the Domestic Violence Prevention Through Education Program aimed at decreasing the number of incidents of dating violence in middle school and high school aged youth.

The Paul Clarke Foundation was incorporated in 1992 to manage a major gift from Paul Clarke who served as the Fort Wayne Community Foundation’s Executive Director from 1972-1984. Funds from The Paul Clarke Foundation are to help disadvantaged youth and their families, with a primary focus on the inner-city of Fort Wayne. Assets of The Paul Clarke Foundation currently total more than $11,500,000.
