The Paul Clarke Foundation awards grants totaling
$270,483 to local agencies in third quarter
Fort Wayne, IN: At their August 26, 2004, meeting, the Directors of The
Paul Clarke Foundation approved nine grants totaling $270,483.
A grant of $60,000 was awarded to the Fort Wayne Park Foundation,
Inc. for the SBA Academy Saturday School at Weisser Center, which
meets each Saturday during the school year for children from pre-K through
12th grade to provide assistance in mathematics and language arts. Using
an African perspective, students learn the value of academic achievement,
respect for others, and community involvement along with a history of the
African people.
Additional Paul Clarke Foundation grants awarded include:
- Allen County Local Education Fund d.b.a. Allen County Education
Partnership: $40,000 for Project READS (Reading, Early Assistance in
Developing Skills), a program in which students obtain one-on-one
tutoring in reading, and parents learn methods that they can use to help
support their children’s reading, writing, and comprehension
development.
- Early Childhood Alliance: $35,000 for Parents as Teachers, a
parent education program in which parents learn and implement strategies
to enhance their child’s development and prepare their child for school
achievement.
- Erin’s House for Grieving Children, Inc.: $35,400 for the
Central City Location and the In-School Programs. The Central City
location offers a safe, nurturing environment where children can receive
peer-support services as they grieve the death of someone they love. The
In-School Program offers these services to those children who are unable
to attend programming at off-site locations.
- Genesis Outreach, Inc.: $34,083 for the Men Achieving
Self-Sufficiency (MASS) program, which serves homeless men in recovery
from drug and alcohol addictions. The program offers transitional
housing for up to 24 months and is directed to maintenance of long-term
sobriety, self-sufficiency, and family reunification.
- Super Shot, Inc.: $20,000 for the Community Immunization
Program, which provides free immunizations to all children and Allen
County and surrounding communities in 30 immunization clinics each month
at more than a dozen clinic locations.
- Vincent House, Inc.: $30,000 to cover salary expenses for a
Youth Services Coordinator and a Youth Services Coordinator Assistant in
the shelter’s Youth Services Program, which coordinates comprehensive
services for homeless children living at Vincent House as well as three
other area shelters.
- Y.M.C.A. of Greater Fort Wayne: $14,000 for the Old Fort
Branch After School Program, which offers children between the ages of 5
and 18 a chance to participate in sports, swimming, cultural,
educational, and recreational activities during the school year.
- Y.M.C.A. of Greater Fort Wayne: $12,000 for the Youth Service
Bureau’s AIM Juvenile Reentry Program, which provides life-skill
educational experiences to incarcerated youth and provides volunteer
mentors to youth upon release to help them adjust back to their home
community.

The Paul Clarke Foundation was incorporated in 1992 to manage a major
gift from Paul Clarke who served as the Fort Wayne Community Foundation’s
Executive Director from 1972-1984. Funds from The Paul Clarke Foundation
are to help disadvantaged youth and their families, with a primary focus
on the inner-city of Fort Wayne. Assets of The Paul Clarke Foundation
currently total more than $11,500,000.
