Community Partnerships Inc. and the Fort Wayne Central Improvement Foundation Inc. are supporting organizations of the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. Supporting organizations are charities that carry out their exempt purposes by supporting other exempt organizations, usually other public charities. The key feature of a supporting organization is a strong relationship with an organization it supports. The strong relationship enables the supported organization to oversee the operations of the supporting organization. Therefore, the supporting organization is classified as a public charity, even though it may be funded by a small number of persons in a manner similar to a private foundation.
Like all charitable organizations, a supporting organization must be organized and operated exclusively for purposes described in (Internal Revenue Code) Section 501(c)(3). A supporting organization must also be organized and operated exclusively to support specified supported organizations. Moreover, a supporting organization must have one of three relationships with the supported organizations, all of which are intended to ensure that the supporting organization is responsive to the needs or demands of the supported organization and intimately involved in its operations and that the public charity is motivated to be attentive to the operations of the supporting organization .
Community Partnerships Inc.
The mission of Community Partnerships Inc. (CPI) is to facilitate joint efforts of funders and other organizations that improve the community's service delivery system through systemwide changes.
In 2008, Lilly Endowment awarded CPI a grant of $20 million to address the most compelling economic need in northeast Indiana. This award was the result of a year-long process of exploring and visioning for the community’s future by a group of community leaders. The leaders discovered that our community is strong in the aerospace and defense industry, as well as advanced manufacturing, and we have the opportunity to grow jobs in those sectors. But we need people with the right skills to fill those jobs in areas such as STEM-related careers (Science – Technology – Engineering – Math). Today, our partners─ Northeast Indiana Fund, K–12 school systems, universities, and industry─ are working to address and expand these needs. The program is called the Talent Initiative.
